Board certification

Board certification is an independent evaluation of a physician’s skill and expertise within a medical specialty. Board certification used to be considered an “extra step” along the path of a physician’s development. It is now common for physicians to be board certified. However, board certification in more than one specialty is still relatively uncommon. In the United States, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is considered the premier and universally recognized entity for board certification. The ABMS is an umbrella organization, consisting of member boards in various medical specialties. The ABMS member boards concerned with Dr. Rappard’s specialization in Neurointerventional Surgery are the American Board of Radiology and The American Board of Neurological Surgery.

Diagnostic Radiology

Dr. Rappard is American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) board certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) in the specialty of Diagnostic Radiology. Diagnostic Radiology is a medical specialty concerned with the use of energy to obtain images from inside the bodies. Doctors, called Radiologists, are trained in interpreting these images to diagnose diseases of the body. As a result, Radiologists tend to be very broadly versed in a wide array of human diseases. Radiologists also leverage their expertise in medical imaging to perform image guided minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat diseases. Prior to becoming a Neurointerventional Surgeon, like Dr. Rappard, physicians undergo training in Radiology and its subspecialty, Neuroradiology. In order to be ABMS eligible in Neurointerventional Surgery, physicians must be ABR certified in both Radiology and Neuroradiology.

Neuroradiology

Dr. Rappard is American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) board certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) in the subspecialty of Neuroradiology, as well as being board certified in the specialty of Radiology. Dr. Rappard is one of just a small number of specialized physicians that is double board certified. Neuroradiology is a medical specialty concerned with the use of energy to obtain images from inside the brain and spine. Doctors, called Neuroradiologists, are trained in interpreting these images to diagnose diseases of the nervous system. Neuroradiologists are versed in a wide array of neurological diseases. In the past, Neuroradiologists leveraged their expertise in medical imaging to perform image guided minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat brain and spine disorders. These Doctors are the forerunners of Dr. Rappard’s specialty, Neurointerventional Surgery. Prior to becoming a Neurointerventional Surgeon, like Dr. Rappard, physicians undergo training in Radiology and its subspecialty, Neuroradiology. In order to be ABMS eligible in Neurointerventional Surgery, physicians must be ABR certified in both Radiology and Neuroradiology.

CNS Endovascular Surgery/Neurointerventional Surgery

Dr. Rappard is American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) eligible in the American Board of Neurological Surgery Recognition of Focused Practice in the brand new superspecialty of CNS Endovascular Surgery, better known by its traditional name of Neurointerventional Surgery. In addition, Dr. Rappard is board certified in the specialty of Radiology and Neuroradiology, potentially making Dr. Rappard one of a very distinguished and rare group of physicians to be triple board certified by the AMBS. Neurointerventional Surgery consists of physicians skilled in performing ultra-minimally invasive image guided procedures of the brain and spine. Prior to becoming a Neurointerventional Surgeon, like Dr. Rappard, physicians undergo training in Radiology and its subspecialty, Neuroradiology. In order for physicians like Dr. Rappard to be ABMS eligible in CNS Endovascular Surgery/Neurointerventional Surgery, physicians must be ABR certified in both Radiology and Neuroradiology.
